Between virtual and in-person advertisements, it can seem like everyone is trying to sell something. To keep people interested, stores are getting creative with their displays so people don't just avoid them. Who could ignore a hilarious meme sign or a clever pun? Read on for some of the most entertaining signs stores have come up with.
Breaking Bad: The Bakery Edition
Breaking Bad is a hugely popular show, so it's no wonder that this store used the name to make a hilarious bread sign. They must have an artist on staff because someone drew an unmistakable portrait of Walter White onto the "Breaking Bread" sign.
The play on the show's title refers to the artisanal french baguettes that the store is hoping to sell. If getting a dollar off wasn't enough to convince customers to buy a loaf, then the clever sign sure will!
Dreaming Of Cheese
Annie Lenox's song "Sweet Dreams" is a classic, but we might like this store's "cheesy" rendition even more. They transformed the lyrics so that they sounded similar to the original song but are instead about cheese.
The sign reads, "Sweet dreams are made of cheese. Who am I to diss a brie? I cheddar the world and the feta cheese. Everybody's looking for stilton..." Even the lactose intolerant shoppers must have stopped to appreciate that genius sign.
They Must Have Kids
Shopping with kids isn't always the easiest task, especially when the little ones are hungry. This store appealed to parents with humor by creating a hilarious kid menu for their food counter.
The items on the list are all named after things kids tend to say at mealtime. A few examples are the "I don't care!" (a half sandwich), "I don't want that!" (mac 'n cheese), and the "Eeeeeeew!!!" (a pb &j). The person who made this brilliant menu must have kids.
Donut Panic Over Donuts!
When the craving for donuts strikes, the last thing anyone wants to see is that their favorite shop is boarded up. That's why this donut shop came up with a clever sign to help ease the blow.
They wrote on the board, "Donut panic. We'll be back." It's nice that the owner thought to reassure the customers with a clever sign. Best of all, the donut company's name is "Donut Panic," so the pun is especially meaningful to loyal customers.
Picking Avocados In Game Of Thrones
You know that the internet has officially taken over when there are memes in the supermarket. The store manager must have an excellent sense of humor to approve of a Game of Thrones meme being posted over the avocado bin.
It features the character Daenerys holding a dragon egg that looks like a giant avocado. The meme reads, "That moment when you find the perfect avocado at the supermarket." The show's fans will be especially amused since they know what a big deal that egg was to Daenerys.
The Inception Store Display
This store's employees must have had way too much time on their hands because they created a store display that doesn't just happen overnight. We would imagine they spent weeks, if not months, putting together this brilliant Inception display.
Through the window is a model of the very store customers are peering through. The model has mannequins looking inside, where yet another, smaller model is. And within that model is-- you guessed it-- an even tinier model!
Oh The Irony
We have to wonder if the person who wrote this sign realized the irony of what they said. The paper is on the glass door of a mall maintenance shop. It at first reads, "We can repair anything."
But then in parenthesis, it says, "Please knock hard on the door. The bell doesn't work." For a store that can fix anything, you'd think they'd be able to repair a doorbell! We wonder how many customers caught on to the joke.
One Scoop In A Pine Cone Please
Ice cream shops are wonderful, especially when they have a great sense of humor. This one certainly falls into that category based on their cone display. As per usual, they show the size of their different cones, which include wafer, sugar, and waffle.
The final cone, though, may throw some customers for a loop. It's a, wait for it... PINE cone! We love that a worker went out of their way to make customers laugh.
An Empty Hanger Or An Invisibility Cloak?
This store display may look like it only has an empty hanger on it, but the sign clearly states otherwise. A clever employee jokingly wrote "invisibility cloaks" over the 50% off original price sign.
The sign would be especially humorous to Harry Potter fans since invisibility cloaks are a real thing in those stories. Our only question is if invisibility cloaks did exist, how would the cashier ever find the barcode to ring one up?
Carrots Or Snowman Noses?
Even kids who grew up in a warm climate know that snowmen have carrot noses. That's why this grocery store didn't call the vegetable carrots but instead labeled them as "snowman noses."
We would guess that they made the sign in honor of a snowstorm that just came through. It would be pretty hilarious if they put this sign up in the middle of summer. Or better yet, if the store was in Arizona or Nevada!
A Size Chart Based On Sleep
This coffee shop got clever with its sizing chart by including the number of hours slept beneath each size. A small is for those who have slept 8 to 10 hours, while a medium translates to 5 to 7 hours of sleep and a large 0 to 4 hours.
The best part is that they wrote "WTF is sleep" under the extra extra large. If someone was that sleep-deprived, they probably would need this chart to help them order.
Amp It Up
Stores that have a big dropdown security gate aren't the most sightly. This guitar store found a way to make the gate a part of their brilliant storefront design, though.
They added giant nobs to the top to make it look like the front side of the store is one huge amplifier. The ingenious design isn't just eye-catching, but it also markets the store by indicating to passersby what they sell. Plus, if the door looks that cool imagine what's inside.
Captain America Vs. Iron Man
There must be a huge Marvel fan working at this grocery store because they took the time to create this masterpiece. They formed a Captain America shield and an Iron Man mask out of the different colored soda cases.
Being that they put "VS" in the middle to indicate a battle between the two, we would guess that they did this sometime around the Captain America: Civil War release date. When in doubt, market with superheroes.
Are They Selling Meat Or Pizza?
This butcher must have been pretty bored to have the time to make art out of ground beef. We must say, they did an impressive job of replicating a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle out of ground beef.
Being that the character is eating a "slice of pizza," we would guess it's Michelangelo, the TMNT who loves pizza the most. At the same time, it does confuse the selling point. They're showcasing beef, but all we want now is pizza.
The Big Lebowski Sale
The Big Lebowski is a classic '90s movie starring Jeff Bridges as a slacker who can often be found in a bathrobe. That's why people who have seen the film will get a kick out of this store display.
It has an animated image of Jeff's character picking out milk and it reads, "10% off milk when you shop in your bathrobe." The best of all, the fine print reads, "Yes, we're serious. Limit one per person."
You Get What You Pay For
There are two amazing store displays in this pizza store's kitchen window. The first is an image of Darth Vader talking on the phone. The speaking bubble reads, "Yes, hello. Do you deliver to the dark side?"
The joke indicates that this place has a sense of humor, so customers won't be put off when they read the special of the day. The "special" is written in sharpie and reads, "Order any 2 pizzas and pay for them both." What a deal!
Technically, Eggs Are Boneless Chicken
Selling individual eggs for 35 cents each isn't all that appealing, so this store got creative with how they presented them. On the sign, they instead wrote "boneless chicken." At 35 cents apiece, that sounds like a steal.
The best part is that even when the shopper realizes they're talking about eggs, they get a good chuckle out of it. A sense of humor goes a long way, so a funny sign like that is more likely to get those eggs sold.
Ron Swanson Knows How To Sell Bacon
Fans of the show Parks and Recreation will already know why this sign is so hilarious. It features an impressive portrait of character Ron Swanson, who is a huge fan of bacon and eggs.
Ron is such a fan of the staple breakfast that he even has a framed photo of bacon and eggs in his office. That's why the display quotes the character saying, "Give me all of the bacon you have." The idea is that customers will follow Ron's lead.
Chocolate That's So Good It's Dog Approved
It's fairly well known that dogs can't eat chocolate. And yet, this store seemed to completely disregard that fact by creating a dog store display to sell chocolate. The sign shows a smiling pooch surrounded by rave reviews like "Many yum" and "Such tempt."
The sign implies that the dog is giving these amazing reviews, which doesn't make sense on a number of levels. At least the store display is sure to attract customers, even if they are scratching their heads.
Not Hulk, Bulk
This sign is genius for a number of reasons. For one, it shows an image of the Hulk flexing his muscles and holding a bag of buy-in-bulk nuts. The "Bulk" could be talking about the muscles or the nuts, but either way, it commands attention.
The other bit of brilliance is that "Hulk" is only one letter away from "Bulk." So the sign almost looks like an advertisement for the movie, but it's really directing shoppers to the "Bulk" area of the store.
Grumpy Cat's Frozen Heart
One of the most popular memes to come about is the Grumpy Cat. The cat seems to have a permanent frown and always has a bored look in its eyes. That's why this hilarious store display features a drawing of the cat to indicate the frozen section.
The sign reads "frozen" in big letters, and then in a smaller font underneath it says, "like my heart." It's a little bit sad, but is hilarious to those with a dark sense of humor.
Have A Spinach Party
While most of the store displays we've seen were brilliant and clever, this one is funny because of how lazy it is. The sign reads "Spinach for $1.00! Buy 10 and have a Spinach Party."
We love how they capitalized "Spinach Party" as though it's the official title for something. Unless you're Popeye, that's a pretty absurd idea. To top it off, the sign doesn't even have an image. The lack of effort is what makes it so funny, though.
A Real-Life Like Button
It's amazing how much social media can impact everyday aspects of life. Case in point: an in-store-like button. We would guess that the goal of this store display was to attract more shoppers to buy the item.
Unfortunately, this idea may have backfired. In the days where something popular can get thousands of likes, if not millions, 33 likes doesn't quite cut it. Plus, who wants to touch a button that strangers have pressed?
They Must Be Clownfish
We have to wonder who in their right mind thought that "Entertaining fish" was an appropriate grocery store sign. It'd be one thing if this was a temporary sign, but it's clearly a permanent part of the aisle.
Further down is a sign that reads "Cheese slices," so we know they aren't totally out of their minds. Perhaps they were referring to large quantities of fish meant for entertaining? That or they specialize in selling clownfish.
That's One Way To Sell Romeo & Juliet
This bookstore got candid about Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. On a chalkboard sign, an employee wrote, "Romeo & Juliet is not a love story." Right off the bat, they have customer's attention.
They go on to explain, "It's a three-day relationship between a 13-year-old and a 17-year-old that resulted in six deaths." Anyone who finds that statement surprising might be tempted to read the story, which we would guess was the point of the sign.
Buy A New Family!
This store must have had some spare photos that customers forgot to pick up. Rather than throwing them away or keeping them on file, they decided to try and make a quick buck with them.
But trying to sell other people's photos is no easy task. That's why they created a gag sign that reads, "Don't like your family? Buy a new one!" For just 50 cents, you can buy photos of strangers and pretend they're your family.
Banana Relationship Status: Single
Since shoppers typically buy a bundle of bananas, this grocery store got creative about how they could sell more singles. They added a sign to the bin of individual bananas that reads, "Pick me I'm single."
Who doesn't love a good pun? The joke at least will attract more people to the single bananas, and may even get some shoppers to buy a few. Bananas go bad pretty quickly, so hopefully, these won't go to waste.
Grumpy Cat Is Grumpy About Allergies
This is the second Grumpy Cat store display we've seen, which shows how popular the meme is. Then again, the design looks so similar to the last one we saw that we wouldn't be surprised if this was in the same store.
This sign reads, "You have allergies. Good," as though the Grumpy Cat actually wants others to suffer. It's another dark humor joke, but at least the allergy relief pills right below help to lighten to mood.
At Least They're Honest
Not all products are created equal, and this store isn't going to pretend that they are. They wrote a hilariously honest sale sign that reads, "Not the best but still good."
We wish all salespeople had that level of transparency. Oftentimes when someone is buying a discounted item, they already know that it might not be the best. If anything, the sign might encourage more people to try a cheap alternative just because they were honest about it.
Technology Has Come A Long Way
It's funny to think about how far technology has come by comparing today's items to what older generations had. This store did just that by calling their chalkboards "Victorian i-Pads."
In the context of iPads, a $4 price tag is quite a steal! Of course, a chalkboard can't perform nearly as many functions as an actual iPad, so the value is practically nothing at this point. That must be why they had to come up with a joke to get these things sold!
